Close Enough to Hear God Breathe

The Great Story of Divine Intimacy

What is the heart of God’s story? Sin and punishment? Victory over God’s enemies? Or could it be something much more relational? Pastor and author Greg Paul suggests that the heart of scripture is relationship—specifically the relationship between Father and child. In his latest book, Close Enough to Hear God Breathe: The Great Story of Divine Intimacy (Thomas Nelson, October 2011), Greg Paul invites readers to consider the narrative of scripture from a personal perspective and to find their individual stories inside God’s great love story. Greg paints a compelling portrait of the Father’s heart for his children via stories from scripture and modern life.

Greg opens Close Enough to Hear God Breathe by recalling his daughter Rachel as an infant. He would rock his only daughter as she took her bottle, and she would fall asleep on his chest, close enough to hear her father breathe. Greg slides from this family memory into an intimate retelling of Jesus’ baptism, which concludes with God’s words over his son: “This is my son. My beloved. I am pleased with him.” It is, Greg writes, a pivotal moment in scripture.
