Bible Teacher Nancy Guthrie is Hoping for Something Better
New Book Finds Solutions for Life’s Disappointments in Study of Hebrews
From little disappointments— like a bad haircut or a boring dinner companion— to more significant disappointments—like the loss of a loved one or the death of a dream—most people have experienced their share of disappointment in life. Nancy Guthrie believes that many people, in fact, live with a simmering sense of disappointment keeps them searching for something better around the next corner. In her latest book, Hoping for Something Better: Refusing to Settle for Life as Usual (July 2007, Tyndale House Publishers), Nancy Guthrie guides readers through a study of the book of Hebrews, which, Guthrie says, reveals the “something better” they’ve been searching for all along.
“We don’t have to spend our whole lives on an endless and unsatisfying search,” Guthrie promises. “There really is something better that is within our grasp. That something better is actually someone better. Jesus.” But Guthrie knows that many of her readers will respond to that suggestion with thoughts of Oh, Jesus again, or, Just Jesus? Been there, done that. “It seems so terribly unspiritual to admit that the Christian life, as we’ve experienced it so far, does not seem to be what Jesus meant by abundant life.” Guthrie confesses. “It often feels as if we’ve missed it somehow, that everybody else must be experiencing something we can’t seem to achieve. But we don’t want to admit it to ourselves or anyone else.”
In Hoping for Something Better Guthrie tells her own story of searching for something better than the hopeless sense of hypocrisy she felt as a “professional Christian” with no meaningful connection to God. She speaks to both long-time believers and not-yet-believers with clarity and authenticity providing an honest exploration of real-life issues such as fear of death, guilt and shame, enduring hardship, unhealthy obsessions, and personal ambition. Her thought-provoking style sprinkles fun-loving and moving personal stories into the study, leading to practical application of what has been considered a theologically heavy book of the Bible. reveal the below-the-surface nature as well as the practical tone in the book:
· What Is God Saying to You?
· What Are You Afraid Of?
· Where Are You Going?
· What Do You Need?
· How Can You Know that Your Faith Is for Real?
· How Will You Get Rid of Your Guilt?
· Why Should You Keep on Believing?
· What Are You Waiting For?
· What Is Your Obsession?
· What Are You Dreaming Of?
Hoping for Something Better includes a complete 10-week study for individuals or small groups seeking an in-depth study of Hebrews. In fact, Guthrie sees the reader’s time spent studying Hebrews using the study guide as more valuable than time spent reading the chapters she has written. “I ask the reader to work through the questions on each passage of Hebrews prior to reading my chapter on that passage,” she explains. “Because I know the Word of God speaks to us when we come to it with a desire to hear God speak to us.”
In addition to teaching a weekly Bible class at her church, Nancy Guthrie speaks regularly at women's retreats and evangelistic events nationally and internationally. She is the acclaimed author of Holding on to Hope and the One Year Book of Hope, both from Tyndale House Publishers. Nancy has worked in the Christian publishing industry for over 20 years and currently handles media relations for clients such as the association for Christian Retail and the ministry of Anne Graham Lotz. Nancy and her husband, David, and son, Matt, make their home in Nashville, Tennessee where, according to Nancy, life is less about professional pursuits than about the ordinary aspects of being a wife, mother, friend, and follower of Jesus.
Since its founding in 1962 by Dr. Kenneth N. Taylor as a means of publishing The Living Bible, Tyndale House Publishers has grown into one of the premier publishing houses in the industry.
