Thom Schultz, Chief Executive Officer

Joani Schultz, Chief Creative Officer

 

A native of California and resident of Colorado since childhood, Thom Schultz aspired to be a journalist.  While earning a degree from The University of Colorado and landing a job as a television reporter, Thom also served as a youth worker at a local church.  With his journalistic background and observation of the need for creativity in youth ministry, Thom founded Group Magazine in 1974. 

 

From the one magazine to a full-fledged publisher and service provider for churches, Group flourished.  New staff members were hired from around the country, including a South Dakota native named Joani, who came to the company as a magazine editor in 1983.  From studying sociology at South Dakota State University and experience as an Education Director in Wisconsin, Joani brought great ideas about how children, youth, and adults learn.

 

With Thom overseeing all of Group’s activities and future direction, and Joani adding direction and spark to Group’s products and services, the two are a powerful and complementary team.  Married since 1984, they speak together regularly to church leaders nationally and internationally, and have authored several books including The 1 Thing; Why Nobody Learns Much of Anything at Church: And How to Fix It; The Dirt on Learning; Do It: Active Learning in Youth Ministry; Kids Taking Charge; Creative Faith Ah-Ha's; and their latest project, Friendship First.

 

The two love adventure travel to exotic locations around the world, and count scuba diving among their many talents.  Thom is also a pilot, photographer and cook, while Joani is an avid magazine reader and loves to play piano with their son Matt while he drums or plays guitar.  Thom & Joani both volunteer at their local church and serve where needed.
