Within
every woman, there is a core question of the soul that affects how she sees
herself, sees others and even how she views God. Angela Thomas, author of Do
You Think I’m Beautiful? The Question Every Woman Asks (Thomas Nelson,
February 2003), believes the title of her book echoes the question issuing from
the soul of every woman.
Thomas believes this one question, and how
it is answered from childhood into adulthood, shapes a woman’s personal
self-esteem and her spiritual values.
“The
beauty that I desire is not really about body image,” says Thomas, who vividly
recalls her days as a teenage wallflower.
“The deeper ‘beautiful’ I long for is about complete acceptance. And through the years, I have found myself
looking for that acceptance in every place but the right one.”
Angela Thomas sees this longing to be known as beautiful
as part of the intrinsic design of women.
“Women often settle for ‘reliable’ or ‘efficient’ when they really want
to be known as ‘beautiful.’ I want
women to know that is its okay to ask the question that came attached to their
souls—and I want to see them convinced that the God of Heaven and Earth is
smitten with their beauty.”
In Do You Think I’m Beautiful?, Angela
Thomas shares how she dared to ask this question and how, in her soul’s darkest
night, she heard an enthusiastic, affectionate “yes!” The answer to her question did not come from
the pages of a women’s magazine, from a self-help book, or from increased
self-esteem. Thomas discovered that
only God could affirm her acceptance and beauty, and she offers readers
companionship as they make their own journey.
“I am not alone in my longing,” Thomas states. “All you have to do is walk into a room of
women and look into their eyes, each one desiring to be known as
beautiful. Some almost ask, ‘Do you
think I’m beautiful?’ out loud, and some have learned never to ask it
again.”
As Thomas unfolds the concept of a God who is crazy
about his daughters, she shares her story to explain why it is hard for women
to think of God this way. “When the
entire school began dating, I continued to blend into the background. I remember the high school quarterback
calling my name, and then asking if I thought my friend would go out with
him.” These are the times, Thomas
suggests, when women begin to bind up the precious gifts of longing and
desire—banishing them to a faraway land.
“But we are still women who long to be desired, long
to be rescued and long to be called beautiful,” she writes. “You will feel like the wallflower who is
asked to dance when you finally hear God call you his Beloved. When the desperate heart of a woman becomes
inclined toward God, she is sure to hear his invitation—God calls us to listen
for the music and invites us to join him in the dance.”
As Angela
Thomas shares her own story with humor and honesty, readers learn about the distractions
that keep them from the One who calls them beautiful, what it takes to return
to His embrace and what delights await them there. Angela’s skillful, moving writing style is peppered with funny
stories from her life, and her biblical guidance helps readers bridge the gulf
between the lives they have and the lives they long for. In eleven moving chapters, readers will be
challenged to come with their honest questions, hear the voice of their Creator
and respond to his invitation to dance.
