Says “Love One Another” Isn’t Enough
Angry,
Hurting People Need More
NASHVILLE,
TN— New York Times best-selling author Max Lucado suggests that a bare
command to “love one another” does not seem relevant to most people these
days. How does an angry young person
forgive, much less love, the priest who abused him? Can heart-broken victims really love the terrorists who destroy
their country and loved ones? Or the mother raising her children alone—is she
supposed to love the man who abandoned them?
According to Lucado, the complications and sorrows of twenty-first
century living require something more than an edict to “just do it.” What is
missing for so many people, Lucado asserts, is that crucial, initial step of
receiving love. His new book, A Love
Worth Giving: Living in the Overflow of God’s Love (W Publishing Group,
9/02/02, $22.99), takes readers on a journey of self-discovery that ends in a
river of love and acceptance. The pages
of his book reveal how passionately God loves each of his children—and how
receiving that love empowers them to love one another.
“Many
people tell us to love,” Lucado writes in chapter one. “Only God gives us the power to do so.” A Love Worth Giving opens with a
principle, which states that those who are forgiven much are the ones who love
much. “We often try to conjure up love
by sheer force of will. What’s our
typical strategy for treating a troubled relationship? Try harder.” Lucado writes. “But could it be we are missing a step? Could it be that the secret to loving is
receiving? You give love by first
receiving it.”
Within the
pages of A Love Worth Giving, Max Lucado presents case after case to
support his theory. Memorable
anecdotes, including stories from his own life, illustrate the power of
becoming a “conduit” of divine love.
The book is framed around the words in the Bible of 1 Corinthians 13,
often called the Love Chapter, which describes divine love. Upon this foundation, Lucado illustrates how
God’s perfect love has been lavished on his people, so that his people are

able to
lavish love on one another. Chapter
topics include:
¨ Love is
patient: patience is the red carpet upon which God’s grace
approaches us
¨ Love is
kind: we are quick to think of God’s power, passion, devotion,
but those near him know God comes cloaked in kindness.
¨ Love does
not envy: God offers authentic love. His devotion is the real deal.
But he won’t give you the genuine until you surrender the imitations.
¨ Love is
not easily angered: if we discover that God has doused us with
unconditional love, would that make a difference?
¨ Love keeps
no record of wrongs: today’s thoughts are tomorrow’s actions; today’s
bigotry is tomorrow’s hate crime
¨ Love
always endures: God’s love for his lost children is greater than the pain
of the search.
¨ Love never
fails: others may abandon you, divorce you, and ignore you, but
God will love you. Always. No matter what.
For
the first time, Lucado will be sharing many of these thoughts from A Love
Worth Giving during the 16-city “Come Together and Worship Tour” scheduled
for November 2002. The tour, featuring
Grammy award-winning music artists Michael W. Smith and Third Day along with
speaker Max Lucado, will encourage concertgoers to experience God’s love and
respond in worship. Tour details are
available at www.cometogetherandworship.com.
“This marks the first time renowned Christian
musicians, such as Michael W. Smith and Third Day, have asked an author to
headline a tour with them,” says Mark Sweeney, Publisher of W Publishing
Group. “Max views this tour as a unique
opportunity to experience God’s love and immediately respond to that love
through worshipful music.”
Also
releasing simultaneously with the hardcover edition of A Love Worth Giving
is an unabridged audio edition. Numerous foreign
language editions are being translated; Lucado’s works are already published in
almost two dozen languages. Releasing
in October is a gift book, A Love Worth Giving to You at Christmas,
based on the trade hardcover. Also launching this fall is a series of licensed
greeting cards (Dayspring/Hallmark) featuring the writings of Max Lucado.
The
release of A Love Worth Giving is supported by an extensive marketing
campaign which includes a six-week series of ads in USA Today during
September and October (29,000,000 consumer impressions), direct-to-consumer
catalog advertising, in-store endcap kits, national publicity campaigns and
special retail promotions. A Love
Worth Giving to You at Christmas will be supported with its own counter
display as well as direct-to-church promotions.
