Psychologist Reveals Why Millions Are Attracted to The Secret

Ancient Truths Have Powerful Appeal for Modern Lives

The Secret is far and away America’s top-selling book of 2007*, with almost three million copies sold in less than a year. The popularity of Rhonda Byrne’s The Secret, says psychologist and best-selling author Dr. Henry Cloud, lies in its claim to make sense of—and offer a sense of control over—the seemingly chaotic world we inhabit. In his own counseling practice, Dr. Cloud has seen how these two elements are vital to mental health and happiness, how human beings are perpetually searching for answers to “how the universe works.” Rather than pointing to one “secret” principle for a successful life, Dr. Cloud offers an expanded alternative to The Secret via his new book, The Secret Things of God: Unlocking the Treasures Reserved for You (September 2007, Howard Books, a division of Simon & Schuster). The Secret Things of God is published by Howard Books, a division of Simon & Schuster, which is publisher of The Secret. Publisher John Howard explains that their parent company was willing to authorize publication of Dr. Cloud’s alternative to The Secret because it is not an “anti-Secret” diatribe. Dr. Cloud’s new book offers a discussion of the concepts Byrne touches on in The Secret, while offering an alternative view of the universe.

“The Secret shows the deep hunger we all have for two things,” Dr. Cloud explains. “First, we want to understand the nature of the universe. A multi-city author tour is in the works and advertising is slated for television and print, including USA Today. A floor display has been created for retail use this fall. Dr. Cloud will promote this new title via “New Life Live,” a daily syndicated radio talk show which Dr. Cloud co-hosts (160+ markets in the U.S.).

Dr. Henry Cloud is a clinical psychologist, speaker, radio host and best-selling author. He has been interviewed by, or his books reviewed by, national media such as ABC News, PBS, FOX News, the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times and the Boston Globe. He has co-hosted the nationally syndicated radio program “New Life Live” for more than a decade.
